The Programs
New York’s Access to Home Program
The program provides financial help to low-and-moderate-income residents for work to make their homes more accessible. Work includes building wheelchair ramps, installing handrails and widening bathroom doors to allow for wheelchairs. A recent project included installing a chairlift for a disabled man who had to crawl to upstairs to use his bathroom.
New York’s Affordable Housing Corporation Home Improvement Program
This New York State program provides grants to non-profit, governmental and charitable agencies so that they can help low-and-moderate-income families improve their homes. Home Improvements have included new roofs and other major repair jobs.
RESTORE
This NYS program provides emergency grants to eligible seniors for items that can include new furnaces, roofs and other systems that have failed and constitute an immediate threat to the well-being of the senior.
T-HIP Targeted Home Improvement Program
This program assists low and moderate income homeowners make critical home repairs in targeted areas of persistent and structural discrimination in housing.
The council has overseen hundreds of these types of projects through the years, assisting homeowners to select contractors and ensure construction is done according to industry standards. To be eligible, homeowners must meet income and program guidelines.
