Homeowners

The First Ward Action Council is currently administering three grant programs that have helped hundreds of homeowners throughout Broome County do needed repairs and improve their properties. Renovations have included building new roofs, correcting code violations and, in general, making homes more livable.

The Programs

New York’s Access to Home Program

The program provides financial help to low-and-moderate-income residents for work to make their homes more accessible. Work includes building wheelchair ramps, installing handrails and widening bathroom doors to allow for wheelchairs. A recent project included installing a chairlift for a disabled man who had to crawl to upstairs to use his bathroom.

New York’s Affordable Housing Corporation Home Improvement Program

This New York State program provides grants to non-profit, governmental and charitable agencies so that they can help low-and-moderate-income families improve their homes. Home Improvements have included new roofs and other major repair jobs.

RESTORE

This NYS program provides emergency grants to eligible seniors for items that can include new furnaces, roofs and other systems that have failed and constitute an immediate threat to the well-being of the senior.

The council has overseen hundreds of these types of projects through the years, assisting homeowners to select contractors and ensure construction is done according to industry standards. To be eligible, homeowners must meet income and program guidelines.
