An important part of revitalizing a neighborhood
is attracting new businesses.
So, part of the First Ward Action Council’s mission has been to develop storefront properties in the neighborhood.
So, part of the First Ward Action Council’s mission has been to develop storefront properties in the neighborhood.
Typically, development involves renovating vacant mixed-use buildings and then leasing the ground floors to small businesses often looking to expand. The size of a storefront is typically 1,000-square-feet.
Tenants currently include two beauty salons, a vegan food store, a coffee shop, a crafts shop, real estate office and a LuLaRoe Pop Up Boutique.
Two of the storefronts are located at 81 Clinton St. in the former State Bank of Binghamton building, which is on the National Register of Historic Places,
Two more storefronts are located at 168 Clinton St., the site of the former Lincoln Hotel that was destroyed by fire. The storefronts and apartments at the site are part of a new, mixed-use building that the First Ward Action Council built with the support of New York State Homes and Community Renewal and the Empire State Development Corporation. The construction was part of the Binghamton Gateway Apartments Project.
Additional storefronts are at 174-176 Clinton St., and at 171-177 Clinton St.
The First Ward Action Council goal has been to develop attractive storefronts improving the business district and creating opportunities for new, or growing businesses.
